Course Description


To create an understanding and knowledge of the use of radiation in a dental setting, the processes involved, hazards, and reduce potential risk factors to both patients and members of the dental team

Learning content

DNNET II is designed to help training dental nurses and as an update for established nurses. The Radiography module includes the topics: ionising raditation; dental radiography principles; equipment and materials; radiation protection; patient management; processing films; mounting radiographs; and quality of images.


  • Discuss ionising radiation
  • Define radiation protection in the dental environment
  • Discuss the principles of dental radiography
  • Describe dental radiographs, equipment and materials
  • Recognise the importance of patient management
  • List the procedures involved in the processing and mounting of dental radiographs
  • Be aware of the hazards associated with radiation in the dental surgery
  • Discuss the importance of assuring the quality of images and finding faults
  • Pass the 20 minute assessment
