Paul Cooper

BSc (Hons) PhD

Professor Paul Cooper received his PhD from the University of Birmingham, UK in Cancer Sciences in 1995. He then worked as a post-doctoral researcher at Roswell Park Cancer Institute, New York, US before returning to the UK to work for Novartis Pharmaceuticals. In 2000 he joined the School of Dentistry at the University of Birmingham and became Professor of Oral Biology in 2012.

Paul conducts research into the inflammatory/immune aspects of oral and dental disease and in the biomaterials area. He has particular interest in the interaction between stem cells, inflammation and tissue regeneration with focus in pulp biology. In 2010, he received the prestigious Young Investigator Award from the International Association for Dental Research and was recently appointed as the inaugural President of the European Society of Dental and Craniofacial Stem Cells. He has over 100 full publications in refereed scientific journals and has attracted significant research council, charity and industrial funding to support his work. He is currently the Director of Research at the School of Dentistry and also heads up the Oral Biology teaching area.
