Dr Mike Milward qualified as a medical microbiologist before embarking on his dental career. After initially working in general dental practice, he returned to the School of Dentistry to undertake a number of junior hospital /teaching roles before being appointed as a full time clinical lecturer in Periodontology.

Since his appointment he has developed a profile in teaching and research, becoming a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and completed his PhD in 2010. He is actively involved with the British Society of Periodontology as both Honorary Treasurer and as a member of the Education Committee. His current role is that of Senior Lecturer/Honorary Consultant in Periodontology at the School of Dentistry, University of Birmingham.
