Professor Raj Rayan was the past Dean, Faculty of General Dental Practice (UK), The Royal College of Surgeons of England; and past Associate Dean of Postgraduate Dentistry, London Deanery, University of London.

In 1999, Raj was awarded the Order of the Officer of the British Empire by Her Majesty, the Queen, for services to Dental Education in 1999. He was a former member of the Standing Dental Advisory Committee to the Secretary of State for Health and the Lord Chancellor on Judicial Appointments of Judges as well as of Magistrates. He also served on other advisory panels.

Raj was the youngest Dean of the Faculty of General Dental Practitioners, the Royal College of Surgeons of England where he served as Chairman of Finance, Chairman of Examinations and as Vice Dean. He has examined for the Diploma, Membership and Fellowship examinations of the College and he is an emeritus examiner. He was also an elected Council member of the statutory body, the General Dental Council with the largest vote.

He was the Chairman of the AOG, past President of the British Society for General Dental Surgery, past Chairman of the Pierre Fauchard Academy (UK Chapter) and the National Centre for Transcultural Oral Health which he fathered. He has been elected honorary life member of several dental organisations from many nations including India, Malaysia, UK, Lebanon and Sri Lanka.

He has co-authored, edited and contributed chapters in several significant publications including the Self Assessment Manual and Standards, Pathways in Practice, Selection Criteria in Radiography, Dentists Patients and Minorities, Accessory Points, Occlusion and Articulation and so on. He originated and served on the Editorial Board of the first Continuing Education Journal (CPD-Dentistry) in Britain, which was the first verifiable CPD journal in the UK and continues to serve on several editorial panels.

He is a registered specialist in restorative dentistry and an internationally acclaimed lecturer having lectured as keynote speaker in numerous countries at several international events.

Raj K Raja Rayan OBE was a Director on the Board of Management of the Eastman Dental Institute prior to its merger with University College London. During his tenure, the new International Centre for Excellence in Dentistry was established to underpin the continuing professional development of general dental practitioners. His name is included in the plaque. As Associate Dean at the London Deanery, providing training and development of over 3,600 dentists and 7,000 Dental Care professionals, running over 800 educational activities in London and operating from 15 postgraduate centres, including Hi Fidelity simulation facilities.
